Meaning: Originally spelt Loughlinn (or something similar to that), it was the word used by the Irish to describe what we now know as Scandinavia, the Land of Lakes. When Viking warriors invaded Ireland, some became integrated into the tribal system and were given the name MacLoughlinn, or Son of Scandinavia. Years later, the Irish began to drop the Mac prefix and use Loughlinn as a given name.
