Comments: The gentian is a flower which, according to Pliny the Elder, was named after Gentius, king of Illyria (ruled 180-168 B.C.), who discovered its medicinal properties. His kingdom had its capital at Scodra, today Shkoder, a city located on the shore of Lake Shkoder in northwestern Albania. His name appears to derive from the Proto-Indo-European root g'en-, meaning 'to beget', cognate to Latin gens, gentis, meaning 'kin', 'clan', 'race'.
