(Scholars are in dispute about the date of the tablet. The Mycenean civilization lasted from 1600 to 1200 B.C.) Alexandra is a compound of the Greek verb alexein, meaning 'to protect', and the noun andros, meaning 'man'. It can therefore be roughly translated as 'protector of man'. The name was one of the titles of the Greek goddess Hera.
