Name: Ailsa

Gender: Feminine

Origin: Europe

Language: Scottish

Thematic: Biblical

Meaning: God's promise/God is my vow; noble maiden.

Comments: Ailsa is a Scottish variation of Elsa. Elsa is a Scandinavian diminutive of Elizabeth and therefore means 'God's promise' or 'God is my vow', but as a result of the popularity of Wagner's (fictional) heroine Princess Elsa of Brabant in his opera "Lohengrin" (1850), it is often given the additional meaning of 'noble maiden'. Ailsa Crag is an island off the west coast of Scotland.
