Meaning of this name is unknown.

Alf Salte says: The meaning of the name can be simply to be the fact that at some point in Norwegian history people took lastnames or surnames depending on where they lived at the time and yes when people moved they changed their last name. At some point they stopped changing their names when they moved and kept whatever name had from birth and which was given to them from their father so that the surname became a family name. So my ancestry can be traced back to a place called "Salte" in south west Norway. Why that place has that name is because it used to be a place where people harvested salt from the salty sea-water and the e after "salt" is a grammatical feature that case was controlled by prepositions, so if you said you were going TO this place where they harvested salt, you said "to salte" in the same way you in german would use specific case when you use specific prepositions. Norwegian language has since changed and we no longer use case except for a few reminders of old days but the place has now the name "Salte" and that's the family name many people with ancestry from that region has.
Connie Skjolden says: i look for my family :)
Alf Salte says: The meaning of the name "Salte" is not unknown. "Salt" is - you probably guessed - salt - NaCl and a district in south west of norway was used to harvest salt from the salty sea-water and it possibly originally had the name "Salt". However, old norse language was not unlike german in that they had lots of grammatical patterns such that when you had a preposition "to" or "til" in norwegian you added "e" behind certain words, so the place became known as Salte. Now, fast forward a couple of centuries and Norway started to adopt the practice of people having family names depending on where they lived. So people living in Salte obtained that last name and then they changed the practice that you have whatever family name your father had and now we are close to modern times and I belive it was the father of my grandfather who then changed his last name to Salte because he was born on a farm that was located in Salte and that name got stuck to our family since then. There are several last names in Norway that has a name ending in "e" for the same reason, you also find some without "e" but not "Salt" - nobody in Norway that I know of has that particular last name, but you can find some with the name "Berg" and also people with the name "Berge" that e at end there is similar to the e in "Salte". Also, the origin is definitely Norway - not UK. Salte is an area located in Rogaland in the south west region of Norway, near Bryne.
