Sam Clark DiBrell says: The original name was du Breuil. The first to move to North America was Dr. Christoffe du Breuil in 1700. He was a Huguenot physician, and had fled Catholic persecution and demands in France. His only child, Jean Antoine, was born in Manakin Town of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia, one month after the death of Christoffe. When the boy's mother, Mariann Du Toit du Breuil, remarried, her new husband demanded the boy be put out. Mariann paid her first cousin, Antoine Benin, to take Jean Antoine. Later, Benin decided to tell the boy, he was an indentured servant. Benin also changed his own name to an Anglicized "Anthony Benning," and the boy's name to "Anthony DiBrell." This was documented by Jean Antoine's son, Colonel Charles Lee Dibrell, from conversation with his father. The pronunciation of Dibrell was accented on the second syllable, despite the earlier efforts of the malefactor Anthony Benning to meet his saleability to the English. Only in the 1850's in Guadelupe County, Texas, did some of the family initiate pronouncing Dibrell, with the accent on the first newly developed syllable, Dib; Judge Joseph Burton Dibrell, Jr., told this to his granddaughter, Virginia Lillard Dibrell ( my mother).
