Robert Bushee says: Merriam is the maiden name of my great grandmother Helen Bushee. The name comes to America circa 1630 to Concord with three Brothers Merriam. Joseph Merriam is my ancestor and also of the LDS prophet Joseph Smith. see Dutton family. The name goes back to Kent England 1300s and comes from Merry Ham or Happy home or Happy village. The Merriam family of the 1600s were clothiers. The printers George and Charles Merriam were printers who bought the rights from the Noah Webster family to print the dictionary. They were from Springfield, MA Eve Merriam, poet, took the name in place of her Birth name for personal reasons, she is not a relative of the Merriam family but is certainly a welcome in an adoptive way. There do not appear to be any members left of the Merriam family, bearing the name, in England. So it seems.
Robert Bushee says: In America three brothers Merriam immigrated in the vessel that they chartered to come to the new world. Joseph Merriam is the progenitor of many descendents including Rebecca Merriam Dutton who was an ancestor to Lucy Mack the mother of the LDS prophet and founder Joseph Smith.Joseph Merriam is also the ancestor of George and Charles Merriam from Springfield Massachusetts who were printers and who bought the rights from the Noah Webster family to be able to print the Merriam-Webster dictionary. They are numerous in the state of Massachusetts in towns such as Concord, Lexington, Sudbury, Wayland, etc.The family goes back as far as the 1300s to Kent, England and the Earl of Kent. The name originally was Merry Ham which may have the meaning "happy home"
