Lothar Halbe says: I assume that the meaning of this name is as follows: In the Middle Ages, when agricultural area was lend to farmers in Westfalia (a german speaking country), the area of a farm was fixed to a certain size. It was just big enough, that the farmers family was capable to cultivate this area, to live from the crop, and of course to pay taxes to liege lord and church. For certain reasons, maybe because of population growth or maybe of progress in yield increase, the area of the farm was divided into two equal sized parcels. In consequence, when a farmer was paying his taxes, he had to pay "half" of the tax only, which is in German language "Halbe". So probably in the register of the taxes collector, there was the farmers first name and the additional remark "Halbe". In my family tree, the first registrations are from about 1600.
