New page

Croatian is a language part of the South Slavic languages (western group) which is used primarily by the Croats ( croats living in Croatia and also those in Bosnia and Herzegovina). It is written with the Latin alphabet. The language is based on the Ijekavian pronunciation of Štokavian dialect ,with some influence from Čakavian and Kajkavian, also recognized as valid dialects. There are other dialects too, such as Burgenland Croatian in Austria( less intelligible). The early traces of written Croatian begin in 9-th century, when Old Church Slavonic was used as the language of the liturgy.Text used to be written in three languages: Croatian, Latin and Old Slavic, until the 11-th century.
Today the language is spoken by around 21 million people.
