Meaning: The name Berkuljan in Montenegro is a modified version of Romanian name Berculean. Many Romanian names have suffixes "eanu" or "ean", which indicate the geographical origin of the family. It is practically the same thing as "from" or "of" in English language. In this case the suffix “ean” was added to the name of the hometown of the family in question, which was probably town Bercul (Bercu) also known as Bercu Colonia, situated in the area of Satu Mare near the Hungarian border. During the time the pronunciation of the name remained the same, but in Montenegro the written version changed from "Berculean" to "Berkuljan" in beginning of the XX-th century. There are several interpretations of the origin of the names "Bercul" or "Bercu". One of it is associated to the runic letter Berkana (B) and migration of Saxons and other Germans to Hungary and Romania.
