Meaning: Apparently according to my father, Elias Nicholas Avgoulis (74yrs in 2006) it was a nickname given to his grandfather or great grandfather meaning "the man who rises early in the morning" He originally believed it was "the man who brings the 'eggs' early in the morning" but has since dropped it in favour of the former. His grandfather or great grandfather was a sponge diver and when it was 'off season' for sponges he became a ferryman taking people and goods between the islands and having to get up early to make his deliveries!?

Update on name: My father has discovered that he has been wrong all these years and the name apparently means "man of the dawn". That is he believes more accurate as his grandfather would deliver goods between the islands early in the morning before going to work as a sponge diver and/or between diving seasons.
