Comments: Everything about this name is macabre, and though it has questionable origins it's most widely thought to have originated in Japan. But it has oft popped up in other contries too. But wherever it came from, in all languages it carries the same dark meaning. It's a rare name, as some thought that to bestow a child with this name was to condemm her (or him) to a miserable existance wrought with sorrow and death. Akuju is the masculine form, the more common.

A girl named Akuja was featured in legend, the telling of which has been largely forgotten. She was portrayed as a depressed young woman haunted by terrible crimes she had commited, and the faces of loved ones she'd let die. In the story, she is hunted mercilessly and has everything she's ever loved torn away cruelly. In the end, she sacrifices herself in vain to save her loved ones, but is instead ridiculed for her death and is mocked forevermore by her numerous enemies. The ones she tried to save were tortured to death, and she is said to haunt the place where the atrocities were commited. This location is debated, but the legend features a mountain. It's said that when the full moon shines, you can hear her sorrowful cries upon the harsh wind.
