Stephen ogunbiyi says: The name Ṣóyínká comes Oṣó yí mí ká, meaning the sorcerer surrounds me. Oṣó means sorcerer but is also a shortening of the name of the god of farming, Òrìṣàokó. This link may be because Òrìṣàokó was a sorcerer. This is same for names like Ṣónẹ́kán, Ṣóbọ̀walé, and Ṣódẹkẹ́.
Kayode Soyinka says: According to researcher Michael Olufemi Richard: "Names like Soyinka, Sonekan, Sonuga etc do not derive from "Oso" wizard but rather they derive from Orisaoko, the Yoruba god of Agriculture. The name Soyinka in full is Orisaokoyinka which became shortened by a gradual declension to Sookoyinka, Sooyinka and finally to Soyinka. It is the same for all the other "Soo..." names." I am somewhat convinced that this researcher is right because the name of my family compound in Abeokuta is "Oba'losako" Compound - meaning Oba Olorisaoko Compound.
