Meaning of this name is unknown.

Michelle Mobley says: Re: The meaning of the word "Mobley"...In Denmark a mobler is a furniture maker. When the Vikings invaded Briton they took their craftsmen with them. The island was ruled by the Danes from 793 to 1066. The name is most closely associated with the area near and around Cheshire where Mobberlys were the government leaders. There is a church still standing in Cheshire that was built by the clan in 1204 that has a stain glass window signifying their rule of the area and, of course, their tribute to themselves for building the church.
William Garrett Mobley says: The name Mobley comes from Mobberly as Michelle Mobley pointed out in her comment. However, the etymological source of the name is a fusion between the Norman word "Moburgh" which means "Meeting Place on the Hill" and the Anglic word "Leigh" which means "In the the woods". The name Mobberly is the evolution of the fusion of the two words to refer to the area of Mobberly, England where Vilheim de Mobberly was knighted by King Richard the Lionheart in 1196 (3 years before the King's death) and was then a Parish under Vilheim's control. Vilheim means William but his heritage is Germanic/Viking of his bloodline back to Torf-Einar the Blood Eagle, son of Ragnwald (of the Orknyian Saga). So he is "William of Mobberly" as that is where he was from. Most of this history is available starting with the book Mobley's in America by Milton C. Mobley (my great uncle) and the subsequent research performed from that text by Professor Eno (spelling?) of the University of Mississippi back in the 1970s and 1980s. If you want to do a detailed analysis of the data, you'll have to go there. I'm just passing on what I know from memory.
