Meaning of this name is unknown.

Chris Cudlip says: Apparently the surname Cudlip dates back to Norman times in Devon, England just before the Doomsday book was written. It was original written as "Cuddhas Lipp" or something similar that means a leap over a brook or stream. The name has become Cudlip or Cudlipp over time. There is reference to the surname in the Doomsday book. There is a place/hamlet/village called Cudliptown in Devon above Plymouth and NE of Tavistock
Paul Cudlip says: My understanding has been that the name is Saxon, from the time of Alfred the Great, and referred to one of his barons. There is some element of it denoting water, be it a brook, stream or creek.
Chris Cudlip says: The surname Cudlip most probably originates from Devon in England where a small village named Cudlipptown, NE of Tavistock near Plymouth is located. It's believed to derive from the Norman language from about 1,000 years ago and was originally listed as Cuddah's Lype apparently meaning a leap across a brook or stream. The name is listed in the Magna Carta and can be traced from the SW of England and how it spreads out across the world. Whether the name has one p or two p's it doesn't matter. Cudlipptown is viewable on Google Maps here > https://goo.gl/maps/1vsXBLjcprP2 There is a book about Peter Tavy and Cudlipptown available from Halsgrove Publishing/Amazon with ISBN-10: 1841141437 or ISBN-13: 978-1841141435. There are various locations around the world that bear the Cudlip name, Canada (http://www4.rncan.gc.ca/search-place-names/unique/JCKFB) and New Zealand (http://mapcarta.com/16761036) to name two that are named after the same person who was an officer in the Royal Navy.
