Meaning of this name is unknown.

John Anderson Cressman says: This surname originates near Pfungstadt, Germany as Croesleman (w/oomla) sometime before 768 AD. They were likely descendants of the local Chatti tribe of renown. They were originally Roman Catholic Corrolingians by early 700's and attached to Lorsche Abbey, personally owned by Charlemange. Lorsche was founded by Count Cancor the Robertine as a proprietary church, abbey, and monastery, but became a Benedictine Imperial Abbey after it was gifted to Charlemange shortly before he was crown Holy Roman Emperor there at Lorsche. Pfungstadt was a possession of Lorsche, and Croesleman was connected to the beginnings of Pfungstadt. Then, when Dr. Martin Luther broke with the official church nearby in Worms, the Croessmann's sided with the other protestant princes in this region and became Lutheran, and attended Pfungstadt Lutheran Church until the 30 years war destroyed Germany and northern Europe. They then came to America in several waves with their own money beggining in the mid 1700's and were instrumental in founding Lutheran Church in America. They arrived from Rotterdam to Philadelphia - Johan Nickolaus Cressman. Bought property on Elthreths Alley and several other properties. Went back to bring his three nephews in mid 1700's. There is a ship's register, property feeds, birth and death certificates, complete family trees, and church records going back to the early 1600's from Pfungstadt Lutheran Church.
